The Conductor
The Conductor is a letterpress-printed flag book by Sarah Matthews. It was printed on a Vandercook 4T at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in the fall of 2025 and assembled in spring 2026. The book incorporates a quote by Harriet Tubman:
“I have heard their groans and sighs, and seen their tears, and I would give every drop of blood in my veins to free them.”
Matthews created this work in response to the detention of immigrants by ICE across the United States. Through the flag book structure and the tactile qualities of letterpress printing, The Conductor reflects on resistance, freedom, and the enduring urgency of collective care and action.
